New year, new books!

Our Spring Book Preview will help you choose the right titles for your reading life right now.

Like the actual seasons, publishing seasons differ—and many readers find that spring is their very favorite season in the publishing calendar. Know that when publishers say “spring,” they’re talking about the books publishing in the first months of the year; our own preview covers books releasing from January to mid-April. If you love historical fiction, stories of new beginnings and fresh starts, and books that tend to be popular with book clubs, this is your season! This year we’ve also got heaps of mysteries and thrillers, love stories, literary fiction, and great nonfiction selections. I can’t wait to talk about it all with you!

Our annual Spring Book Preview features a curated list of forthcoming titles worthy of consideration for your TBR. When we say “Spring Book Preview” around here, we’re talking about the whole package: a digital booklet to download, a celebratory and informative event, and now a printed booklet delivered to your actual mailbox (for those who so choose).

As always, I’ve sought to share a wide array of books including the season’s most-anticipated releases and some fabulous off-the-beaten-path finds. Our preview is categorized by genre so you can turn to books you know you’ll love, but I think it’s worth perusing all of the titles (or joining our event to hear me talk about all the books) because the best reading experiences often come from unexpected places.

The digital booklet, live event (and replay), and optional printed booklet are coming your way January 16th. Sign up now and get ready for a brilliant reading season!

A beautiful booklet

The Spring Book Preview is more than just a book list—it’s truly your guide to the season. This year’s edition features 35 brand new titles publishing January through April in the U.S., including an in-depth look at six spotlight titles I want to make sure you don’t miss. Plus we’ve included fun and useful features that will help you feel informed and savvy as you enter this season.

Members and readers who pre-order will receive the our beautiful Spring Book Preview digital PDF booklet the moment it’s released: they can read, enjoy, and return to it again and again for reference all season long and beyond. Peruse our titles at your leisure, print it and tuck it into your planner or book journal, or carry it as an easy list to consult at your library or bookstore.

And now, we’re also offering a professionally printed version! We’ve heard from you for years that you LOVE having a print booklet to hold in your hands and mark up to your heart’s content, but that printing a single copy for your personal use is a real pain and too darn expensive. This year, we’re offering to take care of that for you: if you choose to add on a printed booklet, we’ll ship it out on January 16th. Just place your preorder by January 8.

A fun live event

In addition to receiving our beautiful booklet, Spring Book Preview participants are invited to our fun and exceedingly helpful live event. I’ll walk you through my selections, sharing why I chose them and what makes them noteworthy.

I love talking about great books, and it is such fun to do it live with people who love books as much as you do. And I especially love answering YOUR questions so we save some time for you to chime in with your most pressing questions!

We’ve hosted thousands of readers for online events like this over the years (since 2016!) and we know how to make them fun—and useful. While gathering live adds to the excitement, we include a replay of our preview event with your purchase for you to watch whenever (and however many times) you want.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, simply choose the a la carte option. You’ll receive the Spring Book Preview PDF by email on January 16th. Our a la carte readers also get access to the live preview event and later the replay in their MMD Shop Account.

Great question! Our communities have different scope and emphases: we think of our Patreon offerings as being bite-sized, while MMD Book Club is more like a buffet. We encourage you to choose the one that best works for you and your reading life. (20% of our readers are members of both communities.)

Our WSIRN Patreon community is an extension of the What Should I Read Next podcast, and offers Friday bonus episodes (e.g., One Great Book, Mini Matchmaking, Industry Insights), peeks behind the scenes, and additional curated book recommendations to our readers in that space. Patreon is audio-first, which means you can mostly participate when it’s convenient for you. Members also get invites to our four marquee events: the Summer Reading Guide Unboxing, Fall and Spring Book Preview, and our Team’s Best Books of the Year event. Our patrons also influence the show by offering input on future episode themes and guests and voting on our episode titles.

Our slate of Book Club offerings is more robust, which is why we call it a buffet: we seek to offer lots of great literary content in this space, and don’t expect you to put everything on your plate! We host many live events in this space, including monthly book and author discussions, regular classes on literature and the reading life, and community events like our Readers’ Weekend, Best Book of Summer, Reading Life Rehab, Readalongs, Join Us for Journaling, and more. Our live events are video-driven, but you don’t need to attend live to participate: we record our events so you can watch on your schedule. Our custom-built member site also sets Book Club apart: our 24/7 forums makes it easy to enjoy all the book talk your heart desires, and connect with other readers who love books as much as you do.

The Spring Book Preview is one of our four marquee events each year. In 90+ minutes, Anne runs through all the books in the Spring Book Preview telling you more about why she picked them and what she loves about them. It’s so fun to gather with fellow readers and look ahead to what our reading season will be like.

Yes! We record all our events so you can participate on your schedule. The replay will be available on the website in your MMD Shop Account.

The short answer is no. However, we’d recommend you check your communication preferences and make sure you’re getting emails from us.

Book Club members will get their guide via Book Club email; they’ll also get a reminder email with their Spring Book Preview invite (aka zoom link) in it on January 16th. Please make sure you’re currently getting event reminders from us; we want you to get your Preview PDF and event invite!

Patreon members will get their guide via patreon post (those are delivered by email within minutes of posting); they’ll also get a reminder email with this Unboxing invite (aka zoom link) in it on January 16th. Please make sure you’re currently getting notified of new patreon posts; we want you to get your Preview PDF and event invite!

We're here to help

We sent the guide out by email on May 16th at 9:00 am EDT (try searching for subject line “The 2024 Summer Reading Guide Is Here!).
Unfortunately, as magical as email is it isn’t completely reliable, but don’t worry! If you can’t find the email you can still get your Summer Reading guide—it is attached to the Unboxing event pages.

If you are also not receiving 30 minute reminder emails or our new Sunday Dispatch please email [email protected] and we’ll get you sorted.

We published a Patreon post on Thursday May 16th at 9:00 a.m. EDT with the guide. If you do not have email notifications on for Patreon or you simply can’t find that email, don’t worry! The Summer Reading Guide is attached to this post.

As of last year, the Summer Reading Guide is an exclusive perk for our Book Club and Patreon community members or those who have purchased the guide a la carte. For more information about this change see the blog post What you need to know about the Summer Reading Guide coming May 16th.

We know many of you like to print your copy of the Summer Reading Guide and mark it up. That’s why we authorize readers to print one copy of the guide for personal use only: we’ve included a permission to that effect on the copyright page of the guide. If you choose to have the guide professionally printed, be sure to show them that permission.

But: it pains us to say this but we do not recommend ordering a professionally printed copy this year. Prices at our local print shop have increased 250% in the last two years which makes the price ridiculously high; we’re embarrassed to tell you how much it cost to print our sample copy. And because the Guide is so large, the printed booklet does not lay as flat as we would like. If you really want a professionally printed guide ask a lot of questions about paper weight and binding and perhaps get yourself a couple of quotes. (We’ve also heard good things from you about the online service Blurb and their more reasonable prices, but we haven’t yet tried it ourselves.)

Our team has also been told WILDLY differing file requirements for booklet printing (which is how we’ve always recommended you print the Guide), and we know you’ve been told contradictory things from your nationwide printers as well. Because of these differing requirements/preferences from the printers, we are not in a position to provide customer support for printing.

I personally like the results I got with home printing: we printed at home on letter paper and stapled it together. It’s easy to use, looks great, and was inexpensive to create. If you print at home, be sure to use a PDF viewer (like Acrobat Reader, as opposed to Preview) or some of the pictures may not print clearly. Please be aware that this is a full color design and will use a lot of ink. You can easily print the file labeled “2024 MMD Summer Reading Guide” on 8.5 x 11 paper. The font will be on the small side, but we thought it looked pretty darn good when we tested it!

If you consider our warning and still choose to go the professional route, we’ve created a separate “print file” for you, which breaks the layout of the Guide into 52 single pages. This file is not a booklet layout; it can be stapled, three-hole punched, or spiral-bound. This file is accessible on the Book Club event page, the Patreon post, and in your MMD My Shop Account, depending on how you accessed the Guide. It is clearly labeled as the “print file.”

We will provide a replay after the Unboxing event. That replay will be available beginning May 17. Accessing it will depend on how you got your Summer Reading Guide.

We have heard some people have had issues viewing the Guide in Safari when opening the link from our email. If you download the file to your device and open in a PDF reader or even in Safari it seems to appear correctly. You can also use the link here on the website and that seems to display correctly as well.

We are sorry to hear that it’s not rendering correctly in Safari, but this is not an issue with the actual PDF.

We’re here to help! We really want you to get your guide as soon as possible so you can enjoy it! For any sticky issues we haven’t addressed above, please email us at [email protected] and we’ll get back to you as soon as we can. Our team is small but mighty! We typically respond within one business day, and often much sooner.

It’s always helpful to have as much information as possible so we can look into it right away for you. Depending on the trouble you are having this may mean: your email address, whether you are a Book Club member, Patreon member or a la carte purchaser, what type of device you’re using and the browser, or anything else specific to your situation.

Anne hints at some content warnings in both the Guide and Unboxing event. She does however avoid spoilers which can make it hard to give detailed content warnings.

If you have a particular concern The StoryGraph is a good resource as is GoodReads (search the reviews for your particular concern). Anne has read every book in the Guide so you can also reach out to us at [email protected] to ask about a particular title and content you’re trying to avoid.
