years of reading better together

For the past 10 years the MMD Book Club has been the place readers gather online to share what they’re reading, hear from authors they love, and explore their own reading tastes and preferences. Doing this all together makes it so much more fun. We guarantee we’ll improve your reading life (whatever “improve” means to you).

What would a better reading life look like?

You get to decide. We do a lot of different things in Book Club, but we like to think of it as a buffet where you just take what you like. So what does your reading life need right now? However you choose to participate, we will help you learn more about yourself and help you get more out of your reading life.

Good nerdy fun

You’ve found your book people. We’re the kind of people who think puns should be intended, have confirmed opinions about which pen (or pencil or highlighter) is best for writing in your books, and know exactly what speed we can listen to our audiobook based on the narrator.

If you’re that kind of nerd you are in for a treat. We love celebrating all things books and reading and do that in all the ways. From our super fun book parties (like the Summer Reading Guide Unboxing) to our Sunday Dispatch emails, the MMD Book Club will bring a smile to your face.

Discoverability and discussability

We read a variety of books throughout the year, scheduled with an eye on the seasons. All of our book choices are ones we’ve read and loved. We’re sure some are books you’d be reading regardless, but sometimes we pull in something off the beaten path or from the backlist where it’s no longer getting buzz.

Members tell us all the time, “I never would’ve read this book if it weren’t a Book Club pick–and I loved it!” You might not love all our books though which is okay! We have robust conversations including a healthy dose of respectful dissent.

Make reading pals

As we always say “how good it is to be among people are reading!” Especially among these people. We genuinely think this is the nicest corner of the internet.

A corner where you’ll find readers who share your reading tastes and readers who expand your reading horizons. Book Club members love coming together in our virtual member meetups, in the discussion forums, and connecting with other readers in their area IRL.

Frequently Asked Questions

While that would simplify things some, no, we do not ship books as part of your membership. Our community are heavy library users and not everyone would even want the book each month. We do our best to share the upcoming books well in advance so you can place a library hold or obtain your own copy of the book in print, digital, or audio format.

Great question! Our communities have different scope and emphases: we think of our Patreon offerings as being bite-sized, while MMD Book Club is more like a buffet. We encourage you to choose the one that best works for you and your reading life. (20% of our readers are members of both communities.)

Our WSIRN Patreon community is an extension of the What Should I Read Next podcast, and offers Friday bonus episodes (e.g., One Great Book, Mini Matchmaking, Industry Insights), peeks behind the scenes, and additional curated book recommendations to our readers in that space. Patreon is audio-first, which means you can mostly participate when it’s convenient for you. We host two events each semester in Patreon: one seasonal preview (like Summer Reading Guide Unboxing) and occasional additional events like Ask Us Anything, Live Mini Matchmaking, or Trivia Night. Our patrons also influence the show by offering input on future episode themes and guests and voting on our episode titles.

Our slate of Book Club offerings is more robust, which is why we call it a buffet: we seek to offer lots of great literary content in this space, and don’t expect you to put everything on your plate! We host many live events in this space, including monthly book and author discussions, regular classes on literature and the reading life, and community events like our Readers’ Weekend, Best Book of Summer, Reading Life Rehab, Readalongs, Join Us for Journaling, and more. Our live events are video-driven, but you don’t need to attend live to participate: we record our events so you can watch on your schedule. Our custom-built member site also sets Book Club apart: our 24/7 forums make it easy to enjoy all the book talk your heart desires, and connect with other readers who love books as much as you do.

Yes, the Summer Reading Guide Unboxing is one of our marquee events. Book Club members are invited to this and our other marquee events, the seasonal previews and our Team’s Best Books of the Year.

While the app does make staying involved in Book Club easy, no, you do not need the app. You can watch replays, discuss the books, and keep up with what’s happening on the website or in the app.

We typically decide on and announce our upcoming reads 6 weeks in advance. This depends a lot on if and when we can get the author scheduled to join us for a chat. Books are announced to Book Club in a live community event—part information/announcement and part community hangout—that’s always a lot of fun. If you’ve not joined Book Club yet, we share that info on the blog, Instagram, and email (we want you to know!)
